Support Roots Music on Public TV: Take the Kumbaya Challenge
You can help make David Holt’s State of Music a public TV series. Go here to join the team.
David Holt’s State of Music premiered on North Carolina public television in January as a one-hour special. David introduces viewers to some friends who are taking traditional music to a new level. Featured performers are Rhiannon Giddens of the Carolina Chocolate Drops, traditional ballad singer Josh Goforth, virtuoso fiddler Bruce Molsky, guitar phenom Bryan Sutton, the Branchettes gospel duo and the powerhouse bluegrass band Balsam Range. The program showcases these great performers doing what they do best on location in the very landscapes that nurtured them and their music.

Sonny Ochs created the Wisdom of the Elders interviews at the NERFA conference. In 2013 it spread to both the Folk Alliance International Conference and to SERFA and has rapidly become an essential feature of our Folk Alliance gatherings. At SERFA 2015 we have an exciting and special Wisdom panel called “The Rounder Roundtable.” We’ll bring together the three founders of Rounder Records – Ken Irwin, Marian Leighton Levy, and Bill Nowlin – with “Elder repeater” Alice Gerrard, who recorded for Rounder as half of Hazel and Alice, and Si Kahn, who has released and rereleased recordings on Rounder Select and Rounder’s Philo imprint. All came from outside the South, but became deeply involved in its culture and social issues. Art Menius, the first president of Folk Alliance International, will facilitate our session.

Book Review: Change the Story, Change the Future
David C. Korten, Change the Story, Change the Future: A Living Economy for a Living Earth (Oakland: Berrett-Koehler, 2015)

Public intellectual and Yes! Magazine co-founder David Korten as built his reputation on tomes reaching 400 pages or more such as When Corporations Rule the World and The Great Turning: From Empire to Earth Community. His latest, Change the Story, Change the Future: A Living Economy for a Living Earth, clocks in at a mere 169 pages, but he has filled them with big ideas. Prepared as a “Report to the Club of Rome,” it builds on both his work, especially in The Great Turning, and the Club’s famed The Limits to Growth from 1972.
